Meghalaya

Meghalaya came in to being in April 1970 as an autonomous state and gained a full fledged state (21st state of India) status on 21st Jan 1972.  It has international borders with the Bangladesh on its south and west. Area of the state is 22, 429 sq km and population of 2,318,822 habitants. It has two parliamentary seats in the Lok Sabha. Principal languages spoken in the state are Khasi, Garo and English.

Mukul Sangma has been elected the leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Meghalaya and will be sworn in as chief minister today. He succeds the outgoing Chief Minister D D Lapang who was forced out of the job by dissidents.
