Assam

Assam, also known as gateway to the North Eastren part of the Inida is a state close to India's international borders with Bangladesh and Bhutan.Its arêa is 78,438 sq km wand population of the state is 26,655,528 (2001 census). Principal spoken language of the state is assamese. It is one the largest states of northeastren India and has 14  parliamentary constituencies.

13th May 2011: Congress did well in the state assembly elections 2011 winning 78 out of 126 seats.

17th May 2011: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was unanimously elected the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader on Tuesday. He will take the oath of office and secrecy on Wednesday, becoming Chief Minister thrice in a row, second only to the late Bimala Prasad Chaliha.
