West Bengal State Assembly Bye Elections 2009: Results/Trends November 2009 Elections 10th Nov. 2009, Trinamool Congress-Congress combine Tuesday swept the West Bengal assembly by-elections winning eight of the 10 seats, results are a blow to the ruling Left Front that could bag only one seat. An independent took the 10th seat. Trinamool bagged all the seven seats it contested, retaining five and wresting Belgachia East and Rajganj from its arch rival Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in the vote count Tuesday. Trinamool candidates retained the Bongaon, Serampore, Alipore, Contai South and Egra seats. Congress,contested in three constituencies, finished with one seat. It retained its stronghold Sujapur in Malda district but conceded the prized Goalpokhar seat in North Dinajpur district to the Forward Bloc, (member of Left Front). The Kalchini seat in north Bengal's Jalpaiguri went to an independent. In the 2006 elections, the Left had won 3 of the 10 seats for, which bypolls were held this time.
West Bengal State Assembly Bye Elections 2009: Results August Elections 21st Aug. 2009, Trinamool Congress would win the Sealdah and Bowbazar byelections by comfortable margins. Trinamool candidate Shikha Mitra, wife of Trinamool MP Somen Mitra, won Sealdah by a margin of nearly 16,000 votes over CPI candidate Prabir Deb. From Bowbazar AC, Trinamool candidate Swarnakamal Saha won by a margin of over 21,500 votes over Independent candidate Minati Gomes. The bypolls had become necessary after sitting Congress MLAs at Sealdah and Bowbazar, Somen Mitra and Sudip Bandyopadhyay respectively, joined Trinamool and went on to win the Lok Sabha election. With the two victories, the strength of Trinamool in the state Assembly would be 29 and the Trinamool party retain the status of the official Opposition in the state Assembly.
