United Progressive Alliance (UPA) United Progressive Alliance (UPA) is a coalition of Indian political parties which was formed right after the General Election in 2004. UPA is led by the INC, which is the single largest party of the house. The chairperson of the UPA is Mrs. Sonia Gandhi & Mr. Manmohan Singh was chosen the prime minister by the UPA coalition. In the 15th Lok Sabha elections 2009, UPA perfromed better than what was predicted by opinion and exit polls. SP and BSP offered unconditional support from outside to the Congress led UPA government. Members of the coalition are: Due to the volatile nature of coalition politics in India, the constituents of the UPA have been changing. As of now (May 2009), 2008 its members are: Indian National Congress (INC) All India Trinamool Congress(AITC) Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKN) Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)

Withdrawals/Former members: TRS, Left Front: 8 July 2008 on Nuclear Deal Rashtriya Janata Dal(RJD) Lok Janshakti Party (LJSP) (In April 2009, RJD, LJSP could not reach a seat sharing understanding with Congress and decieded to contest elections at their own, eventually leading to formation of Fourth Front with SP.)
