Telugu Desam Party Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was founded by then film star N T Rama Rao in 1982. TDP is a regional party of India and is a major political force in Andhra Pradesh. TDP is the only state party which received the status of main opposition party in the Lok Sabha after 1984 General Elections, when it won 35 of 42 seats in Andhra Pradesh. Congress won more than 400 seats in 1984 General Elections. TDP also came into power in Andhra Pradesh by winning the state assembly elections with ease. In 1995, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, son-in law of Mr. N T Rama Rao, was able to manage the support of MLAs within the TDP to overthrow Rama Rao’s government and become the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. In the 13th Lok Sabha TDP had 29 members where as in the 14th Lok Sabha it has only 5 members. In 2009 elections, TDP could not gain any further than 2004 level and won 6 seats only. It also failed to win a majority in the state assembly elections held in tendom with the Lok Sabha elections.
