Shiromani Akali Dal

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is one of the major regional political party in the state of Punjab. It was founded by Sardar Samukh Singh Chubbal in 1920 as a religious body. Later in the stewardship of Sardar Tara Singh, SAD attained political recognition. Now it is one of the major political party in the state of Punjab.

SAD has seen various splits and reorganization within the party over the period of last four decades or so. The faction led by Sardar Prakash Singh Badal is the one which has most prominent influence in Punjab politics and retains the original name of SAD.

Currently, SAD is heading the state Government with the support of BJP. In the last general elections, which it contested in alliance with BJP, SAD won 8 out of 10 seats contested.

This time (General Elections 2009), SAD contested the elections in alliance with BJP as an NDA partner. It won 4 seats out of 10 contested.
