Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is a dominant political party in the state of Bihar. RJD was founded in 1997 by Mr. Laloo Prasad Yadav, a well know politician who has played a pivotal role in politics in the state of Bihar. He also plays an important role in the current UPA government at the Centre as a Cabinet minister.  This party came into existence due to the corruption charges laid against Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav and his eviction from Janata Dal (JD).

In year 2008, the ECI conferred RJD the national party status following on to its performance in north-eastern states.

Recently, (30th July 2010) Rashtriya Janata Dal(RJD) has been derecognised as a national party by the Election Commission, a decision that comes ahead of the assembly polls in Bihar. RJD, lost its national party recognition following its poor showing in Jharkhand Elections 2009. To get the national party status, a party should be recognised as a state party in at least four states.

In 2004 general elections it won 24 seats

2005 state elections : Lost power and RJD could win only 75 seats in Bihar.

In the run up to elections 2009, RJD alongwith Lok Jan Shakti Party failed to reach a seat sharing arrangement in Bihar with INC. However, RJD joined hands with their archrival LJSP for the 15th Lok Sabha elections.

In 2009 General Elections, RJD contested 44 seats and could win 4 seats only. RJD's tally is significantly dropped from the level of 23 seats in 2004 elections.3

In the run up to the Bihar state assembly elections scheduled this year, RJD has reached an agreement with Lok Jan Shakti party of Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan to contest the elections together.
