Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam DMK is one of the major political force in the state of Tamil Nadu and is one of the oldest political party of the state. DMK came into existence in 1949 as result of split of Dravida Kazhagam party. It was founded by Mr. C Annadurai. DMK has seen changes in fortunes with a major split in 1972 led by MG Ramarao forming AIADMK, which is one of the main rival of DMK in current political scenario. Currently, DMK is the ruling party in the state of Tamil Nadu.

It has strong presence in the state of Pondicherry as well. In the last General Election in 2004 it won 16 seats from Tamil Nadu.

DMK in alliance with Congress perfromed well in the General Elections 2009, even though there was an anti-incumbancy factor. DMK won 18 seats this elections and would be a major faction of ruling UPA alliance.
