Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) means Majority People’s Party is a fast growing political force in the Indian politics. BSP is the party with a national party status. BSP was founded in 1984 by Mr. Kanshi Ram to raise and address the concerns/issues of the socially oppressed section of the Indian society. According to BSP, the people belonging to these oppressed classes have been the victim of Manuvadi system in the country. BSP’s philosophy is inspired by the philosophy of Dr. Ambedkar. Party’s main base was in Uttar Pradesh in the beginning, where currently BSP has the state government. In 13th Lok Sabha BSP has 14 members whereas in the 14th Lok Sabha it has 17. With its ever increasing performances in recent elections of different states, BSP is expected to emerge as the third largest National Party in the General Elections 2009 & from the vote percentage point of view, outclassing the CPM who enjoyed the status of third largest National party for quite some time. In the last elections of the UP state assembly in May 2007, BSP emerged as a single majority party after 15 years of Hung parliament, which has led to several compromises between the political parties and frequent changes in the state governments in the UP. In 2009 General Elections, BSP did marginally better than 2004 General Elections by winning 21 seats. A gain of 2 seats from previos elections. President: Kumari Mayawati Symbol: Elephant
