Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) There are many queries comes to mind when you try to understand the election process either as a voter, contestant or for acquaintance. Election Commission of India’s website has a detailed list of the various questions and answers related to the electoral system, election procedure. Some of the common Terms related to the Election process are explained below: 1. Who can vote? Any Indian citizen with their name on the Electoral roll is allowed to vote. Electoral Rolls are the list of people aged over 18, registered as a voter for each constituency. 2. Elector’s Photo Identity Cards This is an important identity documents issued to a voter and needed for identification of the voter at the time of voting. This was introduced to prevent voting fraud and was a step forward towards electronic voting. 3. Electronic Voting Machines(EVM) EVM are now used in the General and Assembly elections throughout the country. It saves a huge amount of efforts which was required to print and movement of ballot papers and ballot boxes used in the conventional method of voting on ballot papers. Further, it greatly reduces the amount of time needed to count the votes. 4. Political Parties There are three different categories of the Political Parties, they are National, State or registered party. 5. Who can contest in the Elections? Any Indian citizen aged over 25 years who is a registered voter is allowed to contest for the elections to the Lok Sabha and state assembly. For Rajya Sabha the contestant minimum age limit is 30 years. To contest an election candidate need to make a deposit of Rs. 10,000 and 5,000 for a Lok Sabha or State Assembly elections respectively. The deposit is forfeited if the candidate fails to receive more than one sixth of the total number of valid votes in the constituency. For a registered party nominated candidate, for nomination one registered elector is needed. For other candidate ten electors from the constituency are needed for the nomination.
