Highlights of Scheduled General Elections 2009 for 15th Lok Sabha

Election Commission of India announced the schedule for the General Elections 2009 on 2nd March 2009. The election announcement is made in view of the constitutional provisions, as a new Lok Sabha is required to be constituted
before the 2nd June, 2009 because the  term of the 14th Lok Sabha will expire in the normal course on 1st June, 2009.

1.Elections will be conducted in five phases.

2. General Elections 2009 will begin on 16th April 2009 and complete on 13th May 2009.

3. No. of Parliamentary Constituency and States involved in each phase of General Elections 2009 is given below:

4. The Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir state will have election schedule spread over all the five phases.

5. Elections will be conducted in three phases in the states of West Bengal and Maharashtra.

6. States of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Orissa and Punjab will have election schedule spread over two phases.

7. Remaining 15 states and UT’s of the Indian Union will have elections in one phase.

8. Counting will take place on the 16th of May, 2009 and is expected to be completed on the same day.

9. A new Lok Sabha is required to be constituted before the 2nd June, 2009.
